Artist
Mentoring Opportunity - Bridgend
Elbow Room endeavour to provide development opportunities and
support for emerging artists interested in working in the public
domain. In partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council we
are pleased to offer a mentoring opportunity to work with the
artist David Annand on a public art commission in Bridgend Town
Centre.
This opportunity is intended to enable a less experienced local
artist to observe another artist in action, helping them to understand
key issues and be present at strategic moments during the span
of the project. The scheme is open to all local visual artists
who would like to build confidence, learn new skills and find
out how their existing skills can be applied. You may be a recent
graduate, an artist at the start of your career or, in certain
circumstances, a more experienced practitioner who would like
to start applying for larger scale public realm commission opportunities.
The gap between working on small scale commissions, or other self-initiated
opportunities and being awarded a first large scale permanent
commission is often hard to bridge, and this opportunity is designed
to provide some experience and understanding of issues relating
to working in the public realm in this way, such as working with
clients, engineers, health and safety and legal requirements,
and design for public spaces.
The chosen mentee will spend up to 8 days with David, observing
and participating in significant moments during the lifetime of
the project e.g. a design meeting, practical workshop, a site
visit or foundry visit and attending the installation. We will
provide a £50 per day stipend to cover the mentee’s
expenses.
Please note: This is a development and training opportunity, and
the mentee will not be expected to act as a second pair of less-well-paid
hands.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply please send a letter of application (no more than one
side of A4), outlining why you are interested in the opportunity
and how you think it will benefit you. Please also send up to
five images of your work (in PowerPoint, PDF or jpeg format),
a CV and a brief outline of your practice to Nia Metcalfe, by
post or email.
